A Hectors Dolphin flying out of the water. Hectors dolphins can live up to twenty years. It’s main food is shrimps and small fish. There are more Hectors Dolphins around the South Island then the North Island and in the North Island they are called Maui’s Dolphin.
The Hectors Dolphin was named after Sir James Hector, who was the first to discover the Hectors Dolphin. Dolphins attack each other sometimes, but they can’t do much harm to each other.
Hectors Dolphin Alert!
Humans endanger them because they swim quite close into the bay and the boat propellers kill them, especially baby dolphins because they swim really close into the bay. Fishing also endangers them because either they get hooked up in fishing lines or their food gets taken away.
